The fee is reported to be in the region of 4 miilion pounds. Paul Rundle has kindly sent in the latest web report regarding Southampton's interest in MATT JANSEN....... SAINTS IN FOR DOUBLE SWOOP ************************** 8 July, 1998 Saints manager Dave Jones is on the brink of completing the signing of Crystal Palace's highly-rated young striker Matt Jansen and Chelsea star Mark Hughes. Southampton have agreed a 500,000 deal for 34-year-old Welsh international Hughes and are awaiting his decision after opening talks over personal terms. Jones is continuing negotiations with new Palace manager Terry Venables in an effort to lure former Carlisle star Jansen to the Dell in a deal which could top 4million. Palace chairman Mark Goldberg has already rejected a 3.5million offer from Saints for the England Under-21 international. But Saints are armed with the 7.5million from Kevin Davies' transfer to Blackburn and Palace are likely to accept an improved offer to finance Venables' re-building plans. The First Division club have already targeted a replacement for Jansen in the form of Arsenal's England star Ian Wright. Jones is anxious to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. He has already signed Tottenham's David Howells on a free transfer and paid 1.5million for Blackburn's Stuart Ripley. c PA Sporting Life. CPFC haven't mentioned it on CLUBCALL yet. But, if true Dave, we'll take you up on your offer to supply directions etc. **** ___________________________________________________________ ALAN JOHNSTON'S WEB-WATCH ************************* DOUBLE STRIKER EXIT ? ******************** Southampton are desperately trying to sign Crystal Palace's England under-21 striker Matt Jansen. The South Coast club are looking for replacement for Kevin Davies, who recently moved to Blackburn for seven and a half million pounds. Saints boss Dave Jones is currently in negotiations with his Palace counterpart Terry Venables as to what fee is acceptable for the former Carlisle man. Jones has already had one offer of 3.5 million rejected and is set to offer over 4 million in an attempt to prise the player away from Selhurst Park. Venables, though, has made it clear that he is simply not interested in selling a player he believes has a bright future at Selhurst Park. Aston Villa, of course, have already shown an interest in Jansen, though as yet boss John Gregory has yet to substantiate his interest with an offer. **RB** But Ted Lacey, who lives in Southampton, gives us a straw to clutch........ "This seems to be at odds with a report in tonight's Southampton Echo that Saints have signed forward James Beattie from Blackburn for around 1 million." Ted Lacey, Southampton. **RB** Whoops !!! Sorry to hijack your report Alan but I'm sure you will agree that is an important snippet of news !!! *** DYER GOING BACK TO WATFORD ? **************************** Strong rumours doing the rounds are suggesting that Bruce Dyer could be set for a return to Watford, the club that sold him to Palace for 1 million in 1994. Watford boss Graham Taylor is said to want to sign another striker and is prepared to splash out 1 million for Dyer. Dyer has been fairly prolific for the Eagles, forcing his way into the under-21 reckoning, though the word is that Dyer will be leaving the Eagles over the summer and that Watford could be his eventual destination if he does not find himself a Premiership club. RIZZO LATEST ************ Terry Venables is ready to step up his bid to sign midfield ace Nicky Rizzo. The 19 year old Australian has rejected the chance of signing a new contract at Anfield and Venables, acting swiftly, is understood to have already made contact with the former Sydney Olympic star. Venables is familiar with Rizzo, having coached him during his time as the national coach. The Palace coach is hoping to complete the deal once the World Cup finals are over and Venables has returned to Selhurst Park. Probably some time next week. Venables has already signed Dean Austin from Spurs and Israeli international David Amsalem. Venables has promised more signings before the Eagles play in the Inter Toto Cup tournament later this month. NOADES SET FOR ANOTHER RAID *************************** It is being strongly suggested that former Palace owner Ron Noades is set to make another raid on Selhurst Park. He is apparently trailing an unnamed player with first team experience to help bolster Brentford's push to get out of the first division at the first attempt. The player, believed to be a defender, is not thought to figure in Palace's plans. A Selhurst Park insider said; "He has certainly got his eye on a lot of the young players who he feels will not get a chance at Palace. You get the impression that he is offering them the chance to get in the shop window at Brentford, and they are understandably keen to follow him." We await developments. **AJ** Lets hope it's Ismael for 2.75 million *** EAGLES AT FULL STRENGTH *********************** The Eagles are likely to be at full strength for their first pre-season friendly of the summer against Crawley on Saturday. It is understood that Terry Venables will use the game against Doc Martens League side to take a good look at his squad. The game has been arranged as part of a the deal which will see Palace use Crawley's Broadfield Stadium to play their reserve team games. The game at Crawley will also be used to try out the tactics Palace are likely to deploy in the Inter Toto Cup. New signings David Amsalem and Dean Austin are likely to make their debuts for the club in the game. Meanwhile, other pre-season's in the next week to ten days are against Wycombe Wanderers on July 15 and Southend on July 17. @ IMSPORT Alan Johnston. ___________________________________________________ And finally, some transfer news breaking in Italy : Andrea Pegolo is on holiday so he has left his brother Carlo minding the shop.......and Carlo tells us..... From Chris Vaughan-Williams....... The Stadium is only 1 mile from the M23 motorway. From any direction proceed to the southern terminal junction of the M23 at Pease Pottage. From the main roundabout there, follow the A23 North towards Crawley Town Centre for 1 mile - down dual carriageway - to the next roundabout. The Stadium is right next to the roundabout. The first exit is the entry to the ground's 350 space car park. If you don't fancy FC car parks, take the 3rd exit off the roundabout then immediately first left to residential (un-restricted) parking. The 'Half Moon' is 150 yards up this left turning on the right hand side and is the nearest pub (3 mins walk) to the ground. In addition the CTFC social club is open to all spectators and is situated behind the far-end goal stand as you enter the ground. I think you will find that Chairman Maggs has decided (not for the first time) to hike the admission price to GBP 8.00 - which IMO quite frankly for the standard of football in which Crawley play is an absolute rip-off. Chris Vaughan-Williams. And Kevin Stevens says..... Here's how to get to Crawley's new Broadfield stadium. Crawley moved to a new ground on the outskirts of town last year and it is now well signposted, look out for the yellow 'Broadfield Stadium' signs. If you are going to use the M23 (either coming from North or South) it's easier to come off of junction 11. Stay in the middle or right hand lanes and take the A23 towards Crawley town centre. You'll see the ground on the left at the bottom of the hill, turn left at the first roundabout into the ground. There's a club bar behind the southern terrace, the stewards will give you a pass at half time to get back in. From Redhill it's probably easier to stay on the A23 all the way, following the signs to Brighton. When you get to the 'Cheals' roundabout go straight across and turn right at the next roundabout into the ground. Kevin Stevens. **RB** Thanks for that guys. I am still looking for directions for Roots Hall, Southend and The New Den, Millwall. Tony Matthews has sent me very comprehensive instructions for getting to Wycombe Wanderers ground so I'll send that to you in a later bulletin. Can anybody supply instructions for the 'pedestrian' Palace contingent - i.e. getting to the respective grounds from the Bus and Train Stations. ? MORE CRAWLEY INFORMATION... CRAWLEY TOWN FRIENDLY ********************* Well, if you saw my earlier bulletin you will now know how to get to Crawley's Broadfield Stadium to see Palace play on Saturday (11th KO 3.00pm). So, no excuses, I'd like to see as many of you there as possible. I will be going along on Saturday and will be meeting up with Alan Russell and James Mitchell. So I thought a good meeting place would be in the Crawley Town Social Club which, according to the instructions supplied earlier, is behind the far stand. If for some reason or other our admittance is blocked, it will have to be the HALF MOON PUB - 150 yards away. Please come up and say hello if you're there !! And, for the benefit of those who will be travelling to Crawley via Public Transport, Chris Vaughan-Williams can help you...... For those without a motor, public transport is as follows :- 1) Train to CRAWLEY station via THREE BRIDGES (change if necessary - it's the next stop on the Horsham line). 2) Crawley Bus Station is right outside the train station. Take a C8 or C9 and tell the driver you want the nearest stop to the football ground/Half Moon Pub. It's a 3 minute walk from there - just follow the crowds !! or 3) Walking from Crawley train station will take about 25 minutes. From the front entrance turn left and follow the road next to the railway line towards the level crossing (250 yds). Over the crossing and just follow this road for 3/4 mile. At the T-Junction at the end (you'll have passed the Half Moon 150 yds back on the left), turn right - you can see the ground 100 yds on the far side of the roundabout. Chris Vaughan-Williams. **RB** Thanks for all your help on this Chris - very much appreciated.** ________________________________________________ Overseas subscribers will have to bear with me for the next few paragraphs - sorry about that !!! Over to you Tony...... DIRECTIONS FOR WYCOMBE WANDERERS GROUND *************************************** (Taken from their web site: http://www.pindar.co.uk/bucks/). LOCAL PUBS AND GRUB ******************* The nearest pub to the ground is The Hour Glass (144 Chapel Lane, Sands), about 1 mile from Adams Park. Away fans are accepted at the doorman's discretion. Food is served, there are three pool tables, video screens and a trendy Juke Box <../gas/music.htm>. Real Ale is limited to Benskins with the occasional Martson's Pedigree. There is a Chip Shop about 300 metres from the Hour Glass on the corner of Mill End Road and Dashwood Avenue. (opposite direction to the ground). There are a few mobile food outlets on the approach to the ground. A little further afield for the more adventurous, there are:- The Half Moon - 103 Dashwood Avenue - Free House - Beer Garden, no food - approx 1 mile from Adams Park Friend at Hand - West Wycombe Road - Morlands - Food - approx 1 mile from Adams Park Queen - 2 Victoria Street - Fullers - Food - approx 1.5 miles from Adams Park. Nearer the Town Centre, pubs include:- The Hobgoblin - High Street - Hobgoblin Brewery - Jukebox, Beer Garden, Snacks The Falcon - High Street - JD Wetherspoons - Real Ale, Good Food, no Jukebox. Firmament & Firkin - Paul's Row - Firkin Brewery - Real Ale, Food, Jukebox. The Flint Cottage - Amersham Hill (opp Railway Station) - pool table, jukebox, beer garden. The Rose & Crown - Desborough Road - Real Ale, Food, Jukebox. Hogshead - Oxford Road - opened 1997 - loads of Real Ale, Food, TV. Please note that the High Street is a Pedestrian only area between 9.00am and 6.00pm - this is part of a Town Centre enhancement scheme which is due for completion in May 1998. The Town Centre has the usual selection of 'Fast Food' outlets if you're desperate. Chairboys on the Net recommends The Spicy Cuisine in Frogmore for a more unusual selection of fast take-aways. There are also three Indian, one Chinese and three Pizza/Italian Restaurants in the Town Centre. There is also the usual array of Kebab vans in the High Street and outlying roads to catch the punters at 'chucking out' time. If you're travelling by road from the north, exit the M40 at junction 5 and try the Fleur De Lys (Real Ale and Food) in Stokenchurch (5 miles from Adams Park). The pub lies to the right of the main through road and is directly opposite the Kings Arm Hotel (re-opened in 1996). Alternatively, follow the signs to Lane End (3 miles from Stokenchurch) for the Clayton Arms and The Osborne Arms - both in the centre of the village and both serving Real Ale and food. From Lane End take The Row, then Park Lane to join the Lane End Road for an scenic back route into Hillbottom Road. Another option is to leave the M40 at junction 4 and when heading as planned towards the ground, after the third roundabout look out for the Hungry Horse pub on the right hand side at Cressex. This is a large 'chain' pub that usually welcomes football supporters - it specialises in food and has a large car park. I think that is dedication beyond the call of duty there Tony - thanks very much. And thank you to all the others who sent in directions. I'm sorry I couldn't use all of them.*** But, MATT WILLIAMS has a few extra local tips for us..... "Wycombe Wanderers' ground is at the end of an industrial estate, with only one way in or out (at the other end). There is a car park at the ground but I would suspect that this will be full so the best place to park is in the streets outside the industrial estate. "By train - to High Wycombe station from Marylebone (about 40 minutes). Don't moan....this is my journey for every Palace home game! The ground is a long way from the station and the buses are rubbish. Loads of taxis outside the station and the fare should be about ukp6.00 - ukp8.00 one way. Arrange for a pick-up after the game. "Pubs - (The Hour Glass) but they only let home fans/locals in. If you're not wearing your colours, say you live on Rose Avenue near the Hazlemere crossroads and you may get in." Matt Williams. **RB** Thanks for those tips Matt !!! *** Just before we leave the Wycombe Friendly news, Tim Davenport kindly tells us..... "Main stand advance tickets are ukp9.00 ukp10.00 on the night. Maybe cheaper in the away end. Adams Park is at the end of a dead-end road so you can get stuck in a big traffic jam on the way out (if there's a crowd!). So it can be best not to park too close to the ground." Tim Davenport. **RB** Directions for the SOUTHEND and MILLWALL friendlies will follow nearer the time. ** ___________________________________________________
